Recycling isn’t always aluminum and glass.
Monday, December 1st, 2008Good morning,
I live in a condominium complex, and as I left for work this
morning I walked past the dumpsters that serve my group of
buildings. I noticed that someone had leaned against one of
the dumpsters a perfectly good ironing board. I took a moment
to examine it and it was neither rusted nor broken. In fact,
it was in perfectly good working order. The only problem was
that the cover, which can be replaced for a few dollars, was
torn and soiled.
It reminded me of all the furniture and even clothes that
I have bought second-hand in my life. Some of it was for
financial reasons. In four years of college I can’t tell you
how much money I saved by buying blue jeans from Good Will
(which is a great organization).
But other times there are treasures to be had if you just
take the time to look. I have a beautiful dresser in my bed-
room right now that I bought second-hand fifteen years ago
and never had the need to replace.
Not only did I save myself hundreds of dollars by not buying
a brand new dresser, but I also kept another tree from
having to be chopped down to make me a new item and I kept
the second-hand dresser I bought from ending up in a land-
fill.

* Think creatively. Who might be able to use what you are
throwing away? Recycling doesn’t always have to mean aluminum
and glass.
* Donate unwanted articles of clothing, furniture, and books
to appropriate agencies so they can be used again.
* If there is a second-hand store or used furniture store in
your neighborhood check it out before making a purchase of
new merchandise. You never know what you might find!
