Liposuctioning unwanted blubber out of pampered Los Angelenos
may not seem like a dream job, but it has its perks. Free
fuel is one of them.

For a time, Beverly Hills doctor Craig Alan Bittner turned
the fat he removed from patients into biodiesel that fueled
his Ford SUV and his girlfriend’s Lincoln Navigator.

Love handles can power a car? Frighteningly, yes. Fat–whether
animal or vegetable–contains triglycerides that can be ex-
tracted and turned into diesel. Poultry companies such as Tyson
are looking into powering their trucks on chicken schmaltz,
and biofuel start-ups such as Nova Biosource are mixing beef
tallow and pig lard with more palatable sources such as soy-
bean oil.

Mike Shook of Agri Process Innovations, a builder of biodiesel
plants, says this year’s batch of U.S. biodiesel was likely
more than half animal-derived since the price of soybeans
soared.

A gallon of grease will get you about a gallon of fuel, and
drivers can get about the same amount of mileage from fat fuel
as they do from regular diesel, according to Jenna Higgins of
the National Biodiesel Board. Animal fats need to undergo an
additional step to get rid of free fatty acids not present in
vegetable oils, but otherwise, there’s no difference, she says.

While using fat to fuel cars might be environmentally friendly,
it’s definitely illegal in California to use human medical
waste to power vehicles, and Bittner is being investigated by
the state’s public health department.

If you are building a new home, or remodeling or maybe your
old dishwasher just blew up, you may very seriously want to
consider springing extra for a new, state-of-the-art energy-
saving appliance that uses less water, less energy and is
easier on the environment.

But please remember that business is still business. I just
read a very interesting article that points out what should
be obvious to every American consumer; manufacturers of
‘green’ appliances would be more than happy for you to
replace a perfectly good appliance for one of their new ones
that may only make a minimum difference in conservation and
savings.

Remember: reduce, re-use and recycle! You can probably make
more of a difference by waiting until your old dishwasher is
completely full and running it only three times week versus
running it every night of the week after dinner than by buying
a whole new appliance and stimulation all of the production
waste that goes along with it.

20-PC Anti-Bacterial Food Storage Containers</a>

                            ***

The delightful Appliance Design magazine has a very
interesting news item about a survey regarding consumer
attitudes towards “green” products. It turns out we are
getting sick and tired of all these companies trying to
sell us stuff under the banner of “green” eco-friendly
design.

The intent to purchase green products has dropped about
20% from last year. I too am getting green fatigue. It
seems like every press release and every story has to have
some green angle. Now sure, buying a green washing machine
may save a little energy on your bills, but the there will
sure be a ton of energy wrapped up in the production of
that new machine versus just keeping your old machine
running.

It turns out that consumers are pretty smart. In order to
justify a 4000-dollar purchase for some “green” technology,
they expect to see monthly savings equal to the additional
mortgage payment they would need to make on that four grand.
Since home equity is at 6% right now, 4 grand costs about
20 bucks a month. If that does not come off the gas or
electric bill they realize that you are just trying to sell
them some new crap that does not make economic sense.

Bravo. It turns out that consumers are just as savvy as
businesses about capital expenditures.

* Unfortunately, many people believe that idling is necessary
or even beneficial-—a false perception that has carried over
from the 1970s and 1980s, when engines needed time to warm up.

* Fuel-injection vehicles, which have been the norm since the
mid-1980s, can be restarted frequently without engine damage
and need no more than 30 seconds to warm up even on winter
days.

* In fact, idling longer than that could actually damage your
engine in the long term. Because an idling engine is not op-
erating at its peak temperature‚ the fuel does not completely
combust, leaving residues in the engine that can contaminate
engine oil and make spark plugs dirty. Excessive idling also
allows water to condense in the vehicle’s exhaust, contributing
to corrosion of the exhaust system.

* When starting your car, idle for no more than 60 seconds.

* Except when sitting in traffic, turn your engine off if you
must wait in your car for more than 30 seconds. You can still
operate the radio and windows without the engine running.

* Researchers have studied this to determine the amount of
heat loss through a fireplace, and the results are amazing.
One research study showed that an open damper on an unused
fireplace in a well-insulated house can raise overall heating-
energy consumption by 30 percent.

* A recent study showed that for many consumers, their heating
bills may be more than $500 higher per winter due to the air
leakage and wasted energy caused by fireplaces.

* Why does a home with a fireplace have higher heating bills?
Hot air rises. Your heated air leaks out any exit it can find,
and when warm heated air is drawn out of your home, cold out-
side air is drawn in to make up for it. The fireplace is like
a giant straw sucking the heated air from your house.

* An easy, low-cost solution to this problem is to add a fire-
place draftstopper. A fireplace draftstopper is an inflatable
pillow that seals the damper, eliminating any air leaks. The
pillow is removed whenever the fireplace is used, then rein-
serted after.

One of the things you will hear environmentalists say over
packaging. It is one of the simplest and most effective
things a person can do in their daily lives to reduce waste
and reduce their impact on the environment. And one great
way you can reduce the amount of packaging in the products,
particularly the consumables, you buy…is to buy more!

How does that work? Scroll down to find out.

this is to buy in bulk from one of those warehouse stores.

The country aims to replace all fossil fuels with renewables

According to the Guardian newspaper, a Swedish minister said
oil dependency could be broken by 2020.

But is every step toward efficiency and reducing environmental
impact a good one? One Swedish town is taking this idea to
the extreme. What do you think? Would you welcome this idea
or would it creep you out?

In a bid to increase energy efficiency, a town in western
Sweden is planning to connect the local crematorium to its
district heating system.

“To start with we’re planning on heating our own facilities,
but hopefully we can connect to the district heating network
in the future,” said Halmstad cemetery administrator Lennart
Andersson.

Andersson explained that the idea came up after a recent
environmental review of the crematorium concluded that new
ovens would be needed for the facility to reach certain
benchmarks.

“After all this talk about the environment we realized we
should take advantage of the heat created during cremation,”
he said.

Andersson hopes the cemetery’s plans don’t offend anyone,
insisting the effort is being undertaking strictly on the
basis of its environmental benefits.
